The Asscher Cut Diamond Guide

Read

Often considered the ‘square emerald cut’, there is much more to this diamond cut than that name suggests. A distinctive cut harking back to the Art Deco era, its sleek appearance resonates with many of our clients today.

In this guide we cover the asscher cut’s quieter sparkle, common mistakes when purchasing this cut and inspiration for setting styles to maximise this unique cut.

WHAT IS AN ASSCHER CUT?

An asscher cut diamond is square in shape with cut corners making it almost octagonal.

It has 58 wide-set facets - more than an emerald cut and it therefore offers greater scintillation, otherwise known as the iconic sparkle of a diamond.

THE HISTORY

First developed in 1902 by Joseph Asscher, his namesake cut echoed the shape of the rough diamond and was created to maximise its yield.

It surged in popular during the Art Deco movement and has since become synonymous with that era making it the perfect choice for a vintage-inspired engagement ring.

WHY ASSCHER CUT?

Being an older cut, asscher cut's carry with them the weight of a time-honoured style: a sense of elegance, a certain gravitas.

They were also cleverly modelled on the original shape of a rough diamond, and so minimal wastage from the cutting process means that an asscher cut diamond also offers excellent value for money.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK OUT FOR?

As with an emerald cut, the longer facets highlight any imperfections within the diamond so clarity is of the utmost importance.

We recommend choosing a minimum of G colour and VVS2 clarity for the best results in your asscher cut engagement ring.
